PROVIDERS / LISTING STANDARD

ModelIndex listing standard

ModelIndex exists so people can trust what they're comparing. Every direct listing must meet this standard.

LAST UPDATED 2026-11-05APPLIES TO NEW AND EXISTING LISTINGS

Integrity rules

What every listing must be, whatever it costs.

  1. 01
The model you name is the model that answers.

Every request for a listed model is served by that model. No substitution, no silent fallback to a different or smaller model, and no undisclosed quantization, distillation or reduced context.

  2. 02
Closed models come from authorized capacity.

Closed-weight models (such as Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok) must be served from capacity the developer authorizes. Marketplaces must tell us which upstreams serve each closed model.

    ALLOWED
    • The developer's own API
    • A cloud the developer authorizes (such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Microsoft Azure)
    • A reseller agreement you can show us
    NOT ALLOWED
    • Consumer subscriptions
    • Shared or pooled accounts
    • Trial-credit farming
    • Keys you don't hold directly
  3. 03
Prices well below list need proof.

If you price a closed model more than 10% below the developer's own standard price, those rows stay hidden until we've verified your source: tell us where the capacity comes from and give us a test key (by email, never through the form).

  4. 04
    We test.

We may test any listing at any time, from our own accounts and without notice. A listing that fails a check is removed.

  5. 05
    We decide what's listed.

We can decline or remove any listing. A provider that misrepresents what it serves is removed permanently.

How verification works

For closed models priced more than 10% below the developer's standard price.

  1. STEP 1
    We compare

Every closed-model price is checked daily against the developer's own standard price.

  2. STEP 2
    We ask

Rows more than 10% below list are hidden, and we email you for the upstream source and a test key.

  3. STEP 3
    We test

We confirm the upstream and test the model from our own accounts.

  4. STEP 4
    You're listed

Verified rows appear. Marketplace rows are labelled MARKETPLACE and never take best price.

Listing requirements

What we need to list you and keep your prices current.

You serve a model already on ModelIndex.

Listings attach to models in the index. Models we don't track yet can't be listed until they're added.

Your prices are machine-readable.

A public JSON file, CSV file or API endpoint we can fetch automatically, listing each model with USD per 1M input and output tokens. We keep your listing in step with it, so there's nothing to resubmit when prices change.

Your prices are public.

A human-readable pricing page that matches the machine-readable source. No negotiated, invite-only or contact-sales pricing.

Anyone can sign up.

Self-serve account and API key, with no sales call required.

Your API is documented.

Public API docs and the model id you serve each model under.

You disclose how you serve it.

Quantization, context length, max output, data retention, and whether you resell capacity from other sellers. Resold (marketplace) capacity is listed with a MARKETPLACE label and never shown as best price.

Your source stays reachable.

If it stops responding or stops matching your pricing page, your listing is marked stale and excluded from best price until it's fixed.

This standard applies to new submissions and to providers already listed.Submit your inference →
